Helena Bonham Carter Departs The White Lotus Season 4 Days Into Filming
Helena Bonham Carter has exited the upcoming fourth season of HBO’s The White Lotus shortly after production began in France, with her role now set to be rewritten and recast.
HBO confirmed the change in a statement, saying the character created for Bonham Carter by series creator Mike White “did not align once on set.” The network said the role has since been rethought and will be recast in the coming weeks. HBO, White and the show’s producers also expressed disappointment that they will not be working with Bonham Carter on the season, while leaving open the possibility of collaborating with her on another project in the future. Bonham Carter, a two-time Oscar nominee known for roles in The King’s Speech, Sweeney Todd, Les Misérables, Harry Potter and The Crown, had joined the Season 4 ensemble earlier this year. Her exit comes as filming has only just begun; E! News reported that the confirmation came nine days after production started in France. (E! Online)
The upcoming season of The White Lotus is set in France, continuing the Emmy-winning anthology’s tradition of placing wealthy travelers, resort workers and simmering tensions inside a luxury destination. Season 4 is filming along the French Riviera, including Cannes, St. Tropez and Monaco, with additional filming expected in Paris. The story is also expected to involve the Cannes Film Festival. Bonham Carter’s replacement has not yet been announced. The remaining cast is still stacked, with reported and confirmed names including Steve Coogan, Chris Messina, Kumail Nanjiani, Max Greenfield, Heather Graham, Rosie Perez, Sandra Bernhard, Alexander Ludwig, AJ Michalka, Caleb Jonte Edwards and Charlie Hall. Created, written and directed by Mike White, The White Lotus has become one of HBO’s most recognizable prestige hits. Each season follows a new group of guests at a fictional White Lotus resort, gradually revealing personal conflicts, class tensions and, often, a deadly mystery. Previous seasons were set in Hawaii, Sicily and Thailand.
Plot details for Season 4 remain tightly guarded, and HBO has not yet announced a premiere date. Production is expected to continue while Bonham Carter’s former role is revised and recast.
